In a significant recognition of entrepreneurial spirit and dedication, Michelle and Richard Lee, owners of Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii in Alexandria, VA, and soon-to-open Arlington, VA, have been named Franchisee of the Year by the International Franchise Association (IFA). The prestigious award was presented this week at the IFA Annual Convention in Las Vegas, NV. It celebrates franchisees who exemplify leadership, business excellence, and community engagement.

The IFA recognized 116 individuals and teams this year with its 2024 Franchisee of the Year award. This included top franchisees from IFA member brands across multiple industries both nationally and internationally.

From Corporate Careers to Franchise Success

The Lees, a powerhouse husband-and-wife team with two young children, made the bold transition from corporate careers to franchise ownership. They bring a wealth of expertise to their business. Michelle, a coffee aficionado, has a background in healthcare management. Richard boasts experience in engineering, program management, and real estate. Their complementary skill sets and shared vision for growth have been instrumental in their success.

Since launching their Alexandria location—the first of a three-store commitment, the Lees have cultivated a thriving business and established deep roots in their community. They emphasize a supportive workplace culture that ensures employees feel valued and empowered. This creates a positive experience for both customers and staff. Their efforts extend beyond the store. They actively participate in charitable initiatives, from national Maui relief efforts to local partnerships with nonprofits like Lucky Dog Animal Rescue.

“Receiving the IFA Franchisee of the Year award is an incredible honor and a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team,” said Michelle and Richard Lee. “This journey has been filled with learning experiences, and we’re grateful for the support of our customers, team members, and the Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii ‘ohana at the home office. We look forward to continuing our growth and making a lasting impact in the communities we serve.”

A Model for Future Franchisees

The Franchisee of the Year award recognizes outstanding performance and contributions to the franchise industry. It honors business owners who demonstrate excellence in customer service, workforce development, and local community engagement. Nominated by their franchisor, Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii, the Lees exemplify these qualities through their dedication to their team and unwavering commitment to delivering a standout coffee experience.

“Michelle and Richard are the epitome of what being a badass franchisee is all about, and we are incredibly proud to see them recognized nationally by the IFA,” said Scott Snyder, CEO of Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii. “The Lees bring an energy to their business that is infectious and an attention to operational detail that makes them an easy model for other franchisees to emulate. As they expand with their second location in Arlington later this month, we appreciate them both for being the very best version of our brand.”

Richard’s leadership within the brand was further recognized this year when he was named a member of Bad Ass Coffee’s first-ever Franchise Advisory Council. This solidifies their role as key players in shaping the future of the brand.

The Future Looks Bold for the Lees

The honor from the IFA is a powerful validation of the Lees’ journey from corporate careers to successful multi-unit franchise operators. Their ability to balance business growth with community impact sets a high standard for aspiring entrepreneurs. As they prepare to open their Arlington location later this month, their trajectory only continues upward.

“Franchisees of the Year represent the very best of franchising,” said Matt Haller, President and CEO of the International Franchise Association. “They embody the American Dream, create economic opportunity, serve their communities, and show what it means to go into business for yourself, but not by yourself. We are proud to recognize the Lees with the highest honor IFA awards to individual franchisees, and we salute their tireless efforts to uplift all those they serve.”

With their continued passion and commitment to excellence, Michelle and Richard Lee are proving that entrepreneurship isn’t just about business. It’s about making a difference. The franchisee award also shows that franchise talent is not just at the franchisor level. Instead, it takes talent at all levels to grow a brand and deliver a unified and memorable customer experience.
