Sport Clips Haircuts placed learning at the front of its recruitment strategy on July 22nd, 2026, when it hosted its inaugural Level Up Live virtual career experience.

The 90-minute nationwide event brought licensed stylists, cosmetology students, and industry professionals into an interactive program featuring haircutting education, beard grooming guidance, product knowledge, career conversations, scholarship information, and a live question-and-answer session. Employment opportunities entered the conversation after attendees had received practical education and industry insight.

That sequence gave Sport Clips an opportunity to introduce potential candidates to its people, working environment, and professional development message without making the experience feel like a conventional online job fair. It also demonstrated how recruitment marketing can provide immediate value while building longer-term interest in a company.

Recruitment That Starts With Value

Many recruiting events begin with a list of available positions and application instructions. Level Up Live took a different approach by first addressing its audience’s interests and development needs.

Sport Clips and its participating educators demonstrated technical skills, discussed professional beard care, and shared product education from GIBS Grooming. Attendees also heard career stories from team members who had progressed from working behind the chair into management and education roles.

“Today’s beauty professionals want more than a job. They want mentors, education, advancement opportunities, and a clear path to building a meaningful career,” said Julie Vargas, vice president of career opportunities and talent engagement for Sport Clips Haircuts.

The event’s structure reflected that message. It wasn’t a job. It was a journey. Sport Clips gave them an opportunity to observe its educators, hear from working professionals, and consider how their skills might develop within the system.

For human resources teams, this education-first approach can help create a more informed candidate pipeline. Participants gain a clearer picture of the work, the industry, and the available career paths before deciding whether to apply. It’s brilliant!

Giving Candidates a Look Beyond the Stylist Role

Level Up Live also presented hairstyling as a career with several possible directions.

By featuring professionals who had moved into leadership and education, Sport Clips showed attendees that working behind the chair could represent one stage of a broader professional journey. The company’s careers website states that more than 92% of its managers receive promotions from within, while its employment messaging highlights advanced training, mentoring, and team development.

The virtual format helped make those career stories accessible to students, recent graduates, and experienced stylists across different markets. Candidates could enter the company’s world without traveling to a store, attending a trade show, or immediately participating in a formal interview.

That access carries value for both marketing and HR. Potential applicants see more than a job description; they see the people, skills, and professional conversations associated with the brand. At the same time, the company gains an opportunity to build familiarity with candidates who may not be ready to change jobs immediately.

Scholarship information added another early-career connection. By including students alongside licensed professionals, Sport Clips could begin developing relationships with prospective stylists before they entered the full-time labor market.

A Scalable Recruitment Idea for Franchise Systems

The Level Up Live concept holds particular relevance for franchise brands.

Sport Clips locations operate independently, and the company notes that benefits and pay plans vary by location. A national virtual event, therefore, gives the wider franchise system a way to establish a shared first impression before candidates continue conversations with individual employers in their local markets.

The approach does not replace local recruitment. Candidates will still judge an opportunity by the communication, leadership and working environment they encounter at a specific location. However, a central event can give franchisees a stronger starting point by introducing the brand’s career message consistently and at scale.

HR and marketing teams could evaluate a program like this through registrations, attendance, chat participation, applications generated after the event, and candidate conversion rates. Longer-term measures could include offer acceptance, early retention, and the number of attendees who continue engaging with career content.

The most notable element of Level Up Live was not simply its use of virtual technology. It was the order of the experience: teach first, create connections, and then introduce career opportunities.

That approach allowed Sport Clips to give prospective candidates something useful while offering an inside look at the professional haircare industry and the careers available within it. For companies seeking to reach students and skilled workers, the event illustrated how recruitment can become a meaningful brand experience rather than a direct request to apply.
